MATERIALS (examples) for the research

in the problem of folding formation mechanisms

«Guide» (under construction-2012)

«Guide»

·  This folder contains descriptions of diagnostic diagrams, of images of folds and of some exact structural cross-sections.

DIAGNOSTIC DIAGRAMS

·  Diagrams were constructed for two types of fold study. There are three diagrams for single viscose layer folds based on mechanical model [Hudleston, Stephansson, 1973]. The other three diagrams (first version) were constructed based on kinematic model of multilayer fold formation (1977). The second version contains several diagrams for the same kind of folds based on the same kinematic model. This version used the program Fld-nom3.bas for calculation of intra-layer strain parameters.

FOLDS (under construction)

· There are images of natural folds of “similar” type. You may use these images for training of study of formation mechanisms, of measurement of shortening value and for exact kinematic modeling

· There are images of natural folds of “Single viscous layer” type. You may use these images for training of measurement of shortening value and contrast of viscous.

· There are images of natural hinges of folds. These images show some cases of irregularity, including the role of intra-hinge thrusts.

CROSS-SECTIONS (under construction)

· There are three classes (conventionally) of cross-sections:

  1. There are “conceptual sections” which contain the illustration of main idea about structure and about the mechanisms of its formation. It is not possible to study THE NATURAL STRUCTURE based on these materials. Such sections contains the authors idea only.
  2.  There are usual (common) cross-sections as additional to geological map. These sections constructed in coincidence to contours of age-lithological units on the map. Some measurements of bedding inclination in field have used also. But structure is not quite exact. Such sections you may use for study of common features of structure.
  3. The necessary kind of cross-sections are very seldom. These sections have constructed especially as separate kind of field work including total measurements of full list of parameters of folds (strike and dip angles of bedding, axial surfaces, hinge lines, et. c.) along river valley for instance. The initial scale of such section is 1:10000 and final as 1:25000. You may use only such sections for goals of  study of real natural folding.
